Tree size and water calculator
Two five-second calculations that prevent the two classic mistakes: a tree that does not fit the room, and a stand that runs dry overnight. Formulas: NCTA's 80% taper observation and the extension-service rule of one quart of water per inch of trunk diameter.
1. Will it fit?
Width check: many sheared farm trees carry roughly an 80% taper, so a tree of the height above can be wide at the base (NCTA). Measure your floor space.
2. How much water?
Rule: stands should provide 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter (NCTA); a fresh tree can drink more than a quart a day in the first week, so check daily. Details in the care guide.
